About 180 Hinsdale households spent a third night without electricity after Monday's severe storm, and the finish line has moved again.
Village President Greg Hart posted an update to his personal X account Wednesday afternoon, July 29, reporting that ComEd now expects to restore most remaining customers by Thursday morning or midday, July 30. That replaces the Wednesday-morning target Hart set Tuesday evening, as we reported, which was not fully met.
The numbers, day by day
Monday's storm knocked out power to roughly 1,200 ComEd customers in Hinsdale and downed utility wires at nine locations across the village. By Tuesday afternoon, July 28, about 700 customers remained without service. That evening, Hart said ComEd had assigned or dispatched crews to about 90% of remaining outages, with 80–90% of those expected back online by Wednesday morning.
That didn't happen. In a Wednesday morning post, Hart reported about 600 customers were still in the dark. By Wednesday afternoon, the count had dropped to approximately 180.
"We remain in close contact with ComEd leadership and will continue advocating for the fastest possible restoration until every resident has power," Hart wrote Wednesday afternoon.
Ignore the Friday date in ComEd's portal
As we reported Wednesday, Hart warned residents that the Friday, July 31 restoration estimate appearing in ComEd's online outage portal is a "generic placeholder" and not specific to Hinsdale. ComEd confirmed that directly to Hart.
Storm damage beyond the outages
The storm also caused hail damage to Hinsdale police cars, flooding in key municipal buildings, and damage to the Hinsdale Food Pantry, according to Patch. The village deployed two woodchippers Tuesday, one on the north side and one on the south side, to clear downed trees. No branch pickup dates have been announced; residents should check villageofhinsdale.org for updates.
The storm was part of a regional severe weather outbreak that left more than 530,000 ComEd customers without power across the utility's service area. Wind gusts exceeded 80 mph in DuPage County communities including Downers Grove, Elmhurst, and Westmont.
Hinsdale Government Week Ahead
No Village Board session specifically addressing storm response or ComEd accountability has been announced. The village's next regular Board meeting agenda has not yet been posted as of Thursday, July 30. Residents still without power Thursday morning should monitor Hart's X account (@_Greg_Hart) and the ComEd outage map for the latest restoration status.
