Most of the roughly 700 Hinsdale homes still without power after Monday's severe storm should have electricity back by Wednesday morning, July 29, Village President Greg Hart said.

Hart posted the restoration update to his personal X account Tuesday evening, July 28, reporting that ComEd has assigned or dispatched crews to about 90% of the remaining outages in Hinsdale. Of those, 80–90% are expected to be restored by Wednesday morning.

"I know how difficult these extended outages are for our residents, and we will continue advocating for our community until power is fully restored," Hart wrote.

What happened Monday night

The storm hit Hinsdale on Monday, July 27, knocking out power to approximately 1,200 ComEd customers and downing utility wires at nine locations across the village, according to Patch. By early Tuesday afternoon, about 700 homes remained dark.

The storm was part of a regional severe weather outbreak that left more than 530,000 ComEd customers without power across the utility's service area, according to the Chicago Tribune. Wind gusts exceeded 80 mph in DuPage County communities including Downers Grove, Elmhurst, and Westmont, and golf ball-sized hail was reported across several suburbs, NBC Chicago reported.

ComEd said in a statement Tuesday that its service area has experienced a level of severe weather "unlike what we've seen in recent years" and has already weathered more storms in 2026 than in all of 2025.

Village response

The village deployed two woodchippers simultaneously on Tuesday, July 28, one serving the north side and the other the south side, to clear downed trees from streets and yards.

No branch pickup dates have been set. Residents should check villageofhinsdale.org for updates on debris collection scheduling.

Hart said the village remains in "frequent, direct contact" with ComEd and is pushing for full restoration as quickly as possible.

Context

This is the second significant power outage to hit Hinsdale in less than a month. A storm on Friday, July 3, knocked out service to about 800 customers; 94% were restored by the following afternoon, a faster recovery than the current event.

ComEd's broader restoration timeline for its full service area calls for 80% of all outages restored by noon Wednesday, July 29, with the vast majority back online by 10 p.m. Friday, July 31.
