The Clarendon Hills Fire Department will hoist Halloween pumpkins on its ladder truck and send them crashing to the ground at Community Consolidated School District 181's Pumpkin Smash on Saturday, Nov. 7.
The event runs from 10 a.m. to noon at Christ Lutheran Church, 60 55th St. in Clarendon Hills, near the intersection of 55th Street and Route 83, according to D181. Families can bring their leftover Halloween pumpkins for composting.
D181 calls this the second annual Pumpkin Smash. The district described the event as a way for residents to dispose of Halloween pumpkins in an environmentally responsible way while enjoying some pumpkin-smashing spectacle.
The fire department's ladder truck is the main draw. The truck will lift pumpkins high into the air before dropping them, according to the district's announcement.
Scouts from Troop 51 and Pack 51 are organizing and staffing the event.
Christ Lutheran Church sits at 60 55th St., across from the Jewel at 55th and Route 83. The church is hosting the event in its lot.
