The Darien Police Department promoted Luke Somogye to sergeant, effective Oct. 10.
The department announced the promotion on Oct. 29, citing Somogye's 11 years of service and a record that includes two Letters of Recognition and a role in an active shooter response.
Somogye joined the Darien Police Department on Sept. 25, 2015. He has served as a patrol officer, field training officer, evidence technician and juvenile officer, according to the department. He also serves as assistant team leader with the DuPage County MERIT SWAT team and instructs officers in firearms, high-risk vehicle stops, rescue task force operations and rapid deployment.
In 2022, Somogye assisted the Bolingbrook Police Department during an active shooter incident, according to the department. He helped locate and safely take the suspect into custody without the use of force. In 2023, he received a Letter of Recognition for actions to protect a person in crisis until additional help arrived. In 2026, he received another Letter of Recognition for his role with MERIT SWAT in the peaceful resolution of a home invasion investigation.
Somogye holds a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice Sciences from Illinois State University. The department said he has also focused on training other officers.
The promotion is the second new sergeant the Darien Police Department has announced this fall. The department promoted Jeff Simek to sergeant effective Aug. 22, according to a separate announcement posted Oct. 15. The department also announced the retirement of Sgt. Glomb, who concluded a 25-year career, in an Oct. 22 announcement.
