Railroad crossings in Hinsdale will shut down nightly from Friday, Sept. 18, through Monday, Sept. 21, as BNSF Railway conducts track construction along its route through the village.

Several crossings will close each night during the four-day window, according to a Village of Hinsdale notice posted Monday, Sept. 14. The village did not specify which crossings or the exact hours of closure. RoadSafe, a traffic management company, is managing the project and the crossing closures.

The construction follows a pattern of BNSF work along the line. In August, BNSF closed the Prospect Avenue crossing in neighboring Clarendon Hills for a full replacement of all three tracks, crossing surfaces and asphalt. That crossing is the only one in Clarendon Hills, and motor vehicle traffic was rerouted to crossings in Hinsdale and Westmont. The Chicago Tribune reported that Clarendon Hills assistant village manager Mera Johnson said officials asked BNSF to reschedule the work but were told it could not be delayed.

No village official was named in the Hinsdale notice, and no public statement from BNSF or RoadSafe on the scope of the September work is available.

What Metra riders should know

Metra said it will issue commuter alerts for potential service delays on the BNSF line during the construction window. As of Tuesday, Sept. 15, no alerts had been posted on Metra's BNSF line page.

Hinsdale has two stations on the BNSF line: the Hinsdale station at 21 E. Hinsdale Ave. and the West Hinsdale station at Hinsdale Avenue and Stough Street. Clarendon Hills and Westmont are the nearest neighboring stations.

In late May, ahead of the Clarendon Hills closure, Metra BNSF advised affected commuters to consider boarding at West Hinsdale or Westmont and to allow extra travel time. No similar alternate-station guidance has been issued for the September work.
