Portions of Hinsdale lost electricity Tuesday, Aug. 11, after a severe storm tore through DuPage County, knocking out power just 15 days after the July 27 storm left 1,200 homes dark for up to a week.
Village President Greg Hart confirmed the outages on his personal X account Tuesday morning, saying the village is in direct contact with ComEd and has made the utility aware of the affected areas.
"We are in touch with ComEd, have made them aware of the outages affecting our community, and will continue working with them until power is restored," Hart wrote.
Which neighborhoods are without power has not been publicly identified. Hart referred only to "portions of Hinsdale." ComEd has not announced a restoration timeline. Residents can check the ComEd outage map at ComEd.com/OutageTracker for real-time, neighborhood-level detail.
The storm system that hit Hinsdale carried a tornado warning for southern DuPage County until 11 a.m. Tuesday and a severe thunderstorm watch through 2 p.m., according to Patch. The National Weather Service warned the system was capable of producing wind gusts up to 80 mph, torrential downpours and embedded tornadoes. Neighboring Downers Grove reported localized flooding, downed tree limbs and wires, and storm debris throughout that community.
The National Weather Service also warned that the stormy pattern will continue through the end of the week, with more rounds of severe weather possible.
Tuesday's outage marks the second time in 15 days that Hinsdale residents have lost power to severe weather. The July 27 storm knocked out electricity to approximately 1,200 ComEd customers and downed utility wires at nine locations across the village. As we reported July 29, roughly 700 homes were still without power a full day later, and some customers waited nearly a week for full restoration. That storm was part of a regional outbreak that left more than 530,000 ComEd customers without power. ComEd said after the July 27 storm that its service area had experienced severe weather "unlike what we've seen in recent years" and had already weathered more storms in 2026 than in all of 2025.
No Hinsdale Police Department or Fire Department incident reports regarding Tuesday's storm response have been released. Whether downed wires, flooding or mutual aid calls occurred in the village has not been confirmed.
