A parking lot argument between five people in two vehicles ended with one man dead and a woman hospitalized at Oakbrook Center on Sept. 30.

Oak Brook police say the fatal shooting near the L.L. Bean store followed what prosecutors allege was an attempted armed robbery. Chance Jamerson, 29, of Chicago, now faces three Class 1 felony counts of attempted armed robbery in connection with the killing of Justin Hill, 28, of Dolton.

According to DuPage County court documents, Jamerson "or one for whose conduct she is legally accountable" entered a vehicle and pointed a firearm at three people in the parking lot on the afternoon of Sept. 30. The confrontation escalated to gunfire. Hill was pronounced dead at the scene. A woman was also shot and taken to a hospital; her condition has not been updated publicly since Oct. 2.

Oak Brook Police Chief Brian Strockis described the sequence at a Sept. 30 news conference. Five people arrived in two separate vehicles and met in the parking lot near L.L. Bean around 12:40 p.m.

"An altercation occurred between the individuals and shots were fired during that altercation," Strockis said.

One vehicle remained in the parking lot after the shooting. The second left the scene and was located in neighboring Oakbrook Terrace, according to Fox 32 Chicago. Three occupants of that vehicle, two men and a woman, were taken into custody for questioning. All three were released on Oct. 2 without charges.

Strockis credited the department's license plate reader cameras with helping officers locate the second vehicle quickly.

DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin and Strockis jointly announced the charges against Jamerson on Oct. 5. She is the first person publicly charged in the case. The announcement did not say whether Jamerson was among the three people previously detained and released.

If convicted on all three counts, Jamerson faces up to 15 years in prison. She was expected to appear in DuPage County First Appearance Court after the Oct. 5 charges were filed. As of Oct. 10, no public update on the hearing or the promised joint press conference has been released.

Multiple agencies responded to the Sept. 30 shooting, including the DuPage Metropolitan Emergency Response and Investigative Team, Oak Brook Fire Department and DuPage MERIT major crimes and forensics teams. Authorities described the incident as isolated with no broader threat to the public.
