Hinsdale will mark 25 years since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks with a public remembrance ceremony on the front steps of Village Hall.

Village President Greg Hart announced the event on X on Wednesday, Sept. 2, inviting residents to gather at 8:45 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at the building at 19 E. Chicago Ave. The ceremony will honor those killed in the attacks and the first responders who answered the call, Hart said.

Hart said he asked for 25 American flags to surround Village Hall, one for each year since the attacks. Smaller flags will stand in remembrance of every life lost.

Hart, who grew up in Hinsdale, said he was an eighth grader in the village on the day of the attacks and still thinks often about the impact that day had on him and the country.

No formal agenda or list of speakers has been published. Hart's post is the only public announcement so far, and the Village of Hinsdale website had not posted additional details as of Sept. 2.

The building itself carries its own history of remembrance. The Memorial Building, as Village Hall is formally known, was conceived in 1927 by the ladies auxiliary of the American Legion as a tribute to Hinsdale soldiers killed in World War I. The community privately raised the funds and gifted the finished building to the village. The Village Board designated it a local Historic Landmark in February 2001, seven months before the Sept. 11 attacks.

The ceremony is open to the public.
