Contractors will be walking through backyards in neighborhoods north of Ogden Avenue starting in mid-September as Hinsdale begins a $499,599 sanitary sewer rehabilitation project.

The Village Board voted 5-0 on Sept. 1 to award a design/build contract to Burke, LLC of Rosemont for the 2026 Sanitary Sewer Rehabilitation and Lining Project. Trustee Stifflear was absent. Work is expected to wrap up by early winter.

Trustee Neale Byrnes, introducing the contract at the Sept. 1 meeting, said Burke "was the lowest bidder, has performed quality work for the Village in the past, and the project is within budget."

Hoerr Construction, Inc. of Goodfield, Illinois, is listed on the Village notice and door hanger as performing the field work. Crews will access rear-yard manholes in utility easements through private properties. If access through a resident's property is needed, a crew member will knock on the front door. Hoerr representatives will also place door hangers on affected properties before work begins.

The project uses cured-in-place pipe lining, a trenchless method that avoids digging up streets and yards. Crews will clean sewers with high-volume water jetting machines, then install liners inside existing pipes.

What residents should know

The door hanger distributed by Hoerr Construction warns that water jetting can force water out of toilet traps inside homes. As a precaution, residents should keep toilets flushed, drape a towel over the rim, close the lid onto the towel and cover basement floor drains.

During the lining phase, sanitary service will be temporarily disrupted. Residents will be asked to limit use of showers, laundry, toilets and general water. The disruption is not expected to last longer than one workday per location.

Residents may also notice traffic control, equipment noise and chemical odors from the resins used in the lining process. The door hanger states the chemical odor does not pose a health risk and recommends ventilating with fresh air or fans.

Residents with a sanitary manhole in their yard who have dogs should keep them inside on days crews are working nearby.
