Four male teens from Joliet were cited for criminal trespass at the long-vacant Institute in Basic Life Principles building at 707 W. Ogden Ave. at 11:30 p.m. Friday, July 24, marking the second police incident at the property in two weeks.

One 18-year-old and three 17-year-olds were cited and released to appear in court, according to the Hinsdale Police Department's weekly beat report distributed Tuesday, July 28.

The citations are the first enforcement action at the IBLP site since police responded to a fire alarm at the same address on July 13 and found no suspects. As we reported July 15, that alarm was part of a busy week that also included car burglaries on three residential blocks.

The 37-acre campus has sat empty for years, drawing trespassing complaints as recently as this month. Two redevelopment proposals are now active for the site. The Village Board voted 5-0 on Tuesday, July 21, to refer a 19-home subdivision plan to the Plan Commission, and a separate proposal for 11 duplexes and a 169-unit senior living building on the northwest portion is still in early stages. As we reported July 29, the three vacant buildings on the site are slated for demolition once utilities are disconnected.

Village President Greg Hart said in late April that "this is one of the last pieces of undeveloped land in Hinsdale" and that the board's priority is to "ensure that we get it right." Until demolition begins, the empty structures remain a draw for trespassers.

DUI arrest at 55th and Brainard

A 41-year-old Chicago man was arrested for driving under the influence at 1:09 a.m. Sunday, July 26, at 55th Street and Brainard Avenue. He was charged with DUI, driving with a blood-alcohol content above .08, and improper lane use after submitting to testing. He was released to appear in court.

The arrest is the second DUI on the 55th Street corridor in nine days. A 34-year-old Cicero man was arrested for DUI at Woodview Road and 55th Street at 1:39 a.m. July 17. Hinsdale police made 55 DUI arrests in 2025, a rate of 2.2 per officer that ranked second among seven nearby communities, according to the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists.

E-bike curfew stop on Garfield

A 14-year-old Oak Brook boy was cited for a curfew violation at 11:01 p.m. Wednesday, July 22, at Garfield Avenue and Hickory Street after police stopped him for an e-bike violation. He was released to a parent.

Hinsdale's curfew ordinance prohibits minors under 17 from being out after 11 p.m. on weeknights.

What's next for the IBLP site

The Plan Commission will hold a public hearing on The Preserves of Hinsdale subdivision application on Wednesday, Sept. 9, at Memorial Hall, 19 E. Chicago Ave. Public comment is on the agenda.
