The Community House in Hinsdale is hosting a Mah Jongg fundraising tournament on Saturday, Sept. 12, giving local players a chance to compete across 12 rounds and raise money for the longtime nonprofit.
The event runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 415 W. Eighth St. Players rotate tables after each game, with round winners recognized throughout the day and a tournament champion crowned at the end. Lunch is included with registration.
Registration costs $50 for Community House keyholders and $55 for all others, according to the Chicago Tribune. Play follows National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) rules, and every participant must bring a current NMJL card to compete.
The tournament comes as the tile game draws a growing following in the western suburbs. Hinsdale resident Angel Leveston founded the Hinsdale Mahjong Society earlier in 2026 and opened the HMS Mahjong Studio in Westmont in June. The society has welcomed hundreds of players through lessons, events and open play, and its sessions regularly sell out.
"I fell in love with the game almost immediately, not just because of the strategy, but because of the community it creates," Leveston told the Chicago Tribune in July.
