A Chicago woman faces three felony charges in the fatal shooting at Oakbrook Center that killed a 28-year-old man on Sept. 30.
DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin and Oak Brook Police Chief Brian Strockis announced Monday, Oct. 5, that Chance Jamerson, 29, was charged with three counts of attempted armed robbery, a Class 1 felony, as first reported by Patch. Jamerson is the first person publicly charged in connection with the shooting.
Justin Hill, 28, of Dolton was killed at the scene. The shooting occurred around 12:40 p.m. in the mall's parking lot near the L.L. Bean store, according to WGN. A woman was also shot and taken to a hospital. Authorities have not released her identity or an update on her condition.
Oakbrook Center sits less than three miles from downtown Hinsdale.
DuPage County court documents obtained by the Chicago Tribune allege Jamerson "or one for whose conduct she is legally accountable" entered a vehicle in the parking lot. She allegedly pointed a firearm at three people that afternoon. Investigators said five people in two vehicles met in the lot before an argument escalated into gunfire.
One vehicle remained at the mall after the shooting. The second left and was later found in neighboring Oakbrook Terrace, where police took its three occupants into custody. All three were released without charges after further investigation, Oak Brook police said.
She has not been jailed. Patch reported that Jamerson is not listed in the DuPage County jail, and her mugshot has not been made available. The state's attorney's office did not explain why.
Jamerson is expected to appear in DuPage County First Appearance Court during the week of Oct. 5. Berlin's office and Oak Brook police said they will hold a joint news conference after that appearance and will not release additional details about the charges or investigation until then.
Oak Brook police described the Sept. 30 shooting as an isolated incident and said there was no immediate threat to the public. The mall remained open after the shooting.
