Oak Brook police say a driver fled a traffic stop and reached about 109 mph through two suburbs early Sunday, Oct. 18. A DuPage County judge ordered the man held in jail until at least his next court date.
William Brown, 32, of the 13000 block of Drexel Avenue in Chicago, faces two counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding along with multiple misdemeanor and petty traffic offenses, according to a DuPage County State's Attorney's Office news release first reported by Shaw Local. Brown appeared in DuPage County First Appearance Court on Monday, Oct. 19.
The chase began about 2:08 a.m. when an Oak Brook officer spotted a Chevrolet Equinox heading north on Midwest Road toward Kimberly Circle, according to the release. As the SUV approached, the driver allegedly turned off his headlights. The Equinox turned onto Kimberly Circle, made a U-turn and headed back south on Midwest Road.
The officer tried to initiate a traffic stop. Brown allegedly fled, struck a coyote and crossed double yellow lines multiple times while weaving between other motorists, prosecutors said.
The Equinox reached about 109 mph on Cass Avenue heading into downtown Westmont, where Brown allegedly ran multiple red lights, according to the release. He eventually turned into a residential area on Hinswood Drive. Police ended the pursuit but stayed in the area.
The subdivision Brown entered was a dead end. Officers set up spike strips at the entrance and began searching, prosecutors said. Brown tried to leave several times but turned back each time he saw squad cars. About 2:17 a.m., police found the abandoned Equinox in the 1000 block of Hinswood Avenue.
A Willowbrook police officer then deployed a drone and located Brown near an elementary school on Concord Place. After a brief foot chase, officers arrested him, according to the release. Concord Elementary School, which serves prekindergarten through fourth grade, is located on that street.
"Thankfully, no innocent motorists were injured or worse in this instance," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in the release.
Brown remains in custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 9.
