A woman had a necklace ripped from her neck on a downtown Hinsdale sidewalk Saturday evening, prompting police to distribute photos of a person of interest and Village President Greg Hart to respond publicly.
The snatching happened around 6:30 p.m. Saturday, July 11, near Washington Street and the railroad tracks, according to Hinsdale police. The suspect approached the victim from behind, grabbed the necklace, and ran. No weapon was displayed or implied, and the victim was not reported injured.
Police distributed images of a person of interest who was spotted roughly 15 minutes before the theft and again shortly after the suspect fled. No arrest had been announced as of Sunday, July 13, and the investigation remains active.
"When incidents like this occur, they are taken seriously and met with a swift, thorough law enforcement response," Hart said, according to Patch.
In a separate text message to Patch reporter David Giuliani, Hart called such crimes "very uncommon" in Hinsdale and said they understandably draw attention. Hart cited the village's safety reputation; a 2025 GoBankingRates analysis placed Hinsdale 17th among the nation's safest wealthy cities.
The location sits at the center of Hinsdale's commercial district, steps from the Metra BNSF station, where shoppers, diners, and commuters cross paths each evening.

Police have not identified a suspect by name. The person-of-interest photos are the only lead made public. No additional patrols or security measures have been announced.
