Hinsdale is getting its fourth fire chief since early 2024.
The Village Board is set to vote Tuesday, Oct. 20, to confirm Matt Daly as fire chief, replacing Jeffrey Pindelski, who is leaving next month after nearly two and a half years leading the department, Patch reported.
Daly, who has served as assistant to the fire chief since January 2025, was hired with the understanding that he would take over when Pindelski departed, according to a village memo. Village Manager Kathleen Gargano said in the memo that Daly's appointment allows for an orderly transition while strengthening the department's operations.
Before coming to Hinsdale, Daly served as fire chief in Riverbank, California, from 2016 to 2017 and as deputy chief in Downers Grove from 2012 to 2016.
His proposed contract was not included in the board's meeting packet. His expected salary was not available.
Trustees are also set to vote on keeping Pindelski on part-time through February to help the department acquire a new $1.7 million snorkel truck. He would be paid $12,000 based on milestones achieved.
The snorkel, an aerial firefighting vehicle with a 55-foot articulated boom, would replace the department's ladder truck. Pindelski pitched the idea at the Sept. 3, 2024, Village Board meeting, arguing the smaller truck is better suited to Hinsdale's tight business district, alleyways and cul-de-sacs, according to village meeting minutes. The switch would shrink the fleet from five vehicles to four and save up to $1.77 million over five years, depending on whether the village finances or pays cash.
Village President Tom Cauley backed the plan at that September 2024 meeting. "I think it's a nice-to-have. It looks nice in parades," Cauley said of the ladder truck. "But this (snorkel) truck gives you a lot more versatility."
Chief John Giannelli retired April 5, 2024, after seven years. Deputy Chief Jon Carlson, a 26-year department employee, stepped in as interim chief but retired May 30, 2024. Carlson said he left because the Village Board eliminated the deputy chief's position.
Pindelski, who had retired from the Downers Grove Fire Department in July 2021 after 28 years of service, came out of retirement to take the Hinsdale job as interim chief in June 2024. He was later promoted to the permanent role.
With Daly's expected confirmation, residents will have seen four people hold or share the chief's title since Giannelli's departure: Giannelli, Carlson, Pindelski and Daly.
