Flood Brothers takes over Hinsdale's trash and recycling collection Monday, Nov. 2, replacing Republic Services under a three-year contract.
The Village Board approved the switch 5-0 on June 30 after reviewing five proposals and interviewing two finalists. Staff found the Oakbrook Terrace-based company offered comparable service at an estimated 2% lower cost, according to village meeting minutes. Collection days stay the same. Homes south of the railroad tracks keep their Monday pickup. Homes north of the tracks keep Thursday.
What to expect at your curb
New green Flood Brothers carts will be delivered between Monday, Oct. 19 and Saturday, Oct. 31. Each home gets one refuse cart and one recycling cart, both included in the monthly service cost. The carts will match each household's current Republic Services cart size.
Residents who want a different size have until Friday, Sept. 25 to request a change. The village's transition page lists contact information and details from the informational packet mailed to all households in the first week of September.
Do not use the new carts until after Nov. 1. Republic Services handles the final pickups on Monday, Oct. 26 (south of the tracks) or Thursday, Oct. 29 (north). After that, leave your old Republic carts at the curb. Flood Brothers will collect them, though the removal process may take several days.
How the contract was awarded
Trustee Neale Byrnes, who chairs the Environment and Public Services Committee, told trustees at the May 19 first reading that the village received positive references from other municipalities about Flood Brothers' customer service. Village President Greg Hart said staff recommended the company after evaluating cost savings, operational value and services for residents.
Public Services Director George Peluso told the board June 30 that the transition plan includes an online portal for cart selection and account verification, real-time tracking of cart deliveries, and coordination between village staff and the hauler. Flood Brothers CEO Kevin Flood said at the same meeting that "designated customer service representatives would be available to assist residents by phone." Village staff will also help connect seniors and other residents less comfortable with the online portal.
