Candidates for the District 181 Board of Education can begin collecting signatures as of Tuesday, Aug. 25, opening the path to the April 6, 2027, Consolidated Election.

The petition window gives prospective candidates nearly three months to gather the required signatures before filing begins Nov. 16. D181 board seats will be on the ballot, though the district has not yet posted how many are up for election this cycle.

What candidates need to know

Under Illinois election law, school board hopefuls must collect at least 50 signatures from registered voters in the district, or 10% of voters, whichever is less, according to the Illinois Association of School Boards. Candidates must also file a Statement of Economic Interests with the DuPage County clerk and obtain a receipt before submitting their nominating petition.

The filing window is one week: Monday, Nov. 16, through Monday, Nov. 23, 2026. Petitions go to the county clerk's office. Late filings are rejected.

Why it matters now

District 181 serves students across Hinsdale, Clarendon Hills and Burr Ridge, operating Hinsdale Middle School, Clarendon Hills Middle School, The Lane, Monroe, Oak, Walker, Elm, Madison and Prospect elementary schools. The board sets budgets, hires leadership and approves curriculum for every one of those buildings.

The district is also in transition. Superintendent Jim Wipke started July 1 after the board voted 7-0 in December 2025 to approve a five-year contract following Hector Garcia's retirement. In an Aug. 20 Hinsdalean profile of new D181 hires, Wipke said, "I am most looking forward to getting into our school buildings, meeting our students and staff, and continuing to build strong relationships across our incredible D181 community."

New board members elected in April 2027 will begin their terms as Wipke enters his second year leading the district.

How to get started

Prospective candidates can obtain nominating petition forms from the DuPage County Clerk's office. The IASB recommends collecting more than the minimum 50 signatures to build a cushion against any that are invalidated during the review process.
